One of the greatest athletes to come out of Pasadena, Walter Butler is a name that rings synonymous with sports in the city. Walt has trained or contributed to the success of hundreds of men and women over the past 50 years.
He quickly excelled, serving on the student council as an 8th-grade representative, where he gained a multifaceted perspective on issues.
Growing up with his slightly older and stronger brother W.H., Walt maintained a healthy yet competitive relationship.
Despite facing racial challenges at Pasadena High School, Walt gained national acclaim in track and field, setting a CIF record in the 120-yard-high hurdles and competing at the National High School Track and Field meet at the University of Texas.
At Pasadena City College, Walt pursued a major in Public Relations and Outdoor Advertising while serving on the Associated Men’s Student Board. He excelled in football and track & field, eventually becoming the State Junior College Champion in the 120 hurdles after overcoming significant challenges.
In 1979, Walt Butler Shoes opened, becoming a cornerstone of Northeast Pasadena for three decades. Walt applied his advertising acumen in innovative ways, notably ensuring local children had access to sports gear, even if it meant operating without profit.
Numerous anecdotes attest to Walt's financial generosity towards others. Today, he continues to enrich the community by providing space for local entrepreneurs in a building he owns.
In recognition of his athletic achievements and community contributions, Walt was inducted into the Pasadena City College Sports Hall of Fame in 2023. In 2025, Walt will be inducted into the Pasadena Sports Hall of Fame.
