BLACK AUGUST FILM FESTIVAL

AUGUST 16-17, 2025

The Black August Film Festival will be held on August 16-17, 2025. The festival showcases films from around the world that address social issues.

Black August is an annual commemoration and prison-based holiday that honors freedom fighters and political prisoners, highlighting Black resistance against racial oppression. The event takes place throughout the entire month of August.

The Black Guerilla Family began Black August in San Quentin State Prison in 1979. A group of incarcerated individuals came together to commemorate the deaths of Pasadena residents Jonathan P. Jackson (d. August 7, 1970) and George Jackson (d. August 21, 1971) at San Quentin State Prison.

Michael Zinzun Film & Journalistic School

Our Vision

The Michael Zinzun Film & Journalistic School (MZFJS) is a 12-week educational program for aspiring filmmakers and journalists from underserved communities. This initiative will provide students hands-on experience in film production, storytelling, and investigative journalism while highlighting community resilience and recovery efforts.

The program will culminate in a student-produced film documenting the recovery and rebuilding efforts of Altadena residents following the Eaton Wildfires. Students will gain real-world experience while preserving important community narratives. The initiative also fosters creativity, critical thinking, and career readiness in film and journalism.
